Dorothy Kerin was born into an Anglican family on 28 November 1889 in Walworth, a suburb of London. Her father died when she was 12. She was in poor health from early childhood: she suffered from diabetes, meningitis, haemorrhages and other complications; allegedly she had an ecstatic vision early in life. On the morning of Sunday, 4 February 1912 (she was 22), she sank into a state of near coma for two weeks and was clinically dead for eight minutes before instantaneously coming back to life on 18 February. Physicians judged the healing inexplicable by modern science. In those eight minutes, Kerin reported having seen Christ, who told her ‘to heal the sick, comfort the sorrowing and give faith to the faithless’. Media attention followed immediately, the healing was reported extensively in local and national newspapers and even before she was allowed to leave hospital she had become a celebrity. To escape that celebrity status, she spent the next fourteen years with the family of her spiritual director, Dr Richard Langford-James. At his home, she experienced the phases of spiritual development as described by St John of the Cross. Three years after her miraculous healing (some spoke of a resurrection), with the feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary on 8 December 1915, she received the stigmata in her hands; on 9 December the holy wound appeared on her side in the shape of a cross; and on 10 December she received the stigmata in her feet. By then she had already published her first book on her miraculous healing, The living touch (1914). The wounds remained open for several days, and were visible for years. Her stigmata would reappear spontaneously on occasion, though Kerin insisted they were kept secret until after her death. The Church of England did not launch a formal investigation of Kerin’s wounds, though she was examined by an Anglican bishop and others, including physicians, who signed depositions that attested to the authenticity of her stigmata. . Following excerpt from. Woman who 'died' returned with stigmata. It seems there's a woman named Dorothy Kerin who grants us a bit of a rarity. She had a near-death experience way back in 1912 -- memorable, most importantly, for what happened afterward. First, the story: Born in South East London, Dorothy suffered long years of tubercular meningitis and peritonitis. In 1912 she spent two weeks in a deep coma. On February 18 of the aforementioned year, the doctor announced that she would not survive the night. Much to this medic's surprise, however, Dorothy suddenly sat up, declaring that she was well. Subsequent tests revealed no more lesions nor other symptoms associated with her ailments. This according to a book called Near Death Experiences: True stories of Those Who Went to Heaven, by Tessy Rawlins. Overnight, Dorothy became a celebrity. It was inexplicable. It would be inexplicable in our day also. "Dorothy described that during the two weeks prior to her healing, she received a vision of the Lord and angels, " states the book, quoting her as saying, "For me it was a time of indescribable joy and bliss, in a place and environment of exquisite harmony. "I seemed to drift into space. I was no longer conscious of my body, but my soul was overflowing with love and joy, and a transcendent feeling of supreme happiness, impossible to describe in ordinary language.
